Past Experience
Santa Fe River-Bishops Garden Diversion Structure
The Bishops Garden Diversion Structure is an historic grade control structure that serves the important role of stabilizing the river in the heart of downtown Santa Fe. The structure was in imminent danger of complete failure, thus threatening the stability of the river downstream. The design of the project started with a concept based on the City’s River Corridor Master Plan and was fine-tuned using hydraulic modeling. The modeling not only confirmed the hydraulic performance of the structure and its impacts on the existing FEMA flood plain but allowed for a clear understanding of how the new structures would fit into the existing historic stonework. The result is an aesthetically pleasing feature in a high use recreation area that the City has emphasized with a multi-use trail and adjacent park benches. Winner of the ACEC Civil Engineering Excellence Award.
Foothills Enhancement Project
SMA was contracted by the City of Farmington for roadway improvements for a 7,300-foot section of Foothills Drive. Services included roadway widening design, trail design, street improvement plans, roundabout design, intersection geometry, lane assignments, drainage structures and grading plans. Prior to the roadway design, SMA completed surveying, environmental documentation (including a categorical exclusion), and a traffic study to evaluate requirements for potential traffic calming devices. SMA completed proposed drainage improvements to address the issues and participated in public meetings to present the project and answered questions to concerned citizens. Originating as a city funded project, SMA later assisted the community in acquiring state funding.
